Earth year: frequently asked questions

What do the answers look like in the Earth year quiz?

Each answer is a time interval in a fixed model: months for events up to November, then the days of December, the hours of December 31 and, for the newest events, minutes and seconds. The intervals do not overlap. Only events with a single date reach the quiz, and the uncertainty of a dating never crosses the border of the correct interval.

Which events make up one round?

A round has 10 questions: 3 about Earth, 3 about life and 4 about human history, 2 of them about the last 150 years. After each answer you see the scientific dating, the place in the calendar and the source.

Why do questions about the last days of the year have narrower intervals?

If the answers were months, everything from the first humans to the internet would land in December. So for December events the intervals narrow to days, hours, minutes and seconds. The oldest known traces of Homo sapiens (about 300 thousand years) fall on December 31 at about 11:25PM in the Earth year.
